Why I'm For Falk

I’ve sat down to write this post at least a dozen times but an event today pushed me to finally put in words why I'm supporting Kathleen Falk for Governor. When it comes to Wisconsin and the last year and a half since Scott Walker was elected there is so much that comes to mind and so much to write about. From an individual level this last year has awakened the activist in me and renewed my faith in the possibility of a government for the people by the people. The last year has met a different thing for my family as I’ve witnessed firsthand the impacts of Walker’s policies on my mother in law who works as a probation office for the state. As a father I’ve seen the teachers and schools my son will attend in the future be attacked and marginalized as overpaid and unimportant. These are but a few of the issues, thoughts and feelings I’ve experienced and through it all I’ve had faith that the people of Wisconsin would rise up and recall Scott Walker.

Six months ago I would have probably given 6 different answers about who I wanted to challenge Walker. These ranged from unknowns, members of the Wisconsin 14, and pipe dreams. In truth I told most people that I was subscribing to the ABW theory (Anyone But Walker). As we got closer to the recall becoming a reality though I got greedy. I decided I wanted more; I wanted a candidate that I could rally behind. Somewhat surprisingly I found that in Kathleen Falk. I have not always seen eye to eye with Kathleen Falk. As Dane County Executive I disagreed with how she handled some of the social services in the county. I also thought she was tough with the unions when she didn’t have to be. In the end though she always had my vote.

She has my vote again for the May 8th Democratic primary for the office of Governor. Kathleen was tough with unions in the past but she also will be the first to tell you how important it is that they have an equal voice at the table. Kathleen has a plan to invest in our schools, our teachers, and our students. She’ll restore openness to our government that we are sorely lacking. Last but not least, I know she’ll stand up for women and families.

Earlier today I spent some time in urgent care to deal with a sinus infection. While I was waiting, the woman next to me told me her daughter was “back there” getting a pregnancy test. In our brief discussion the woman told me she didn’t know what they were going to do. I told her I’m sure the clinic would give her daughter all her options and work with them as a family if that’s what they wanted. I felt like a bit of a liar as I told her that. Scott Walker has led a charge against sexual education, freedom of choice, and even the freedom of doctors to practice medicine. In truth I had no idea what awaited this woman and her daughter. I strongly believe their future would be better with Kathleen in office and that’s yet another reason why I’m for Falk.

I just started teaching at a local community college and have quickly become acquainted with the many stereotypes associated with my new profession. Oh well, I love my job, and that's all that matters.
